A few years ago, the idea of retailers splurging for megapixel smart cameras was unheard of because of the perception that the technology was too expensive. When compared with standard VGA (video graphics array) cameras on a one-to-one basis, that was true. Today, the price of megapixel smart cameras is just a few percentage points higher than standard resolution cameras, so retailers moving aggressively to limit organized retail crime (ORC) losses are taking a second look. Megapixel camera technology is popular in many market segments, but is it a compelling choice for retail operations?
