Major Retailer Boosts Insight With More SAP Speed
AURUM Holdings, based in the UK, is a major retailer in luxury watches and jewellery. The business owns the Watches of Switzerland, Mappin & Webb and Goldsmiths brands, and runs 150 stores across the United Kingdom. The company is the largest distributor in the world of time pieces from the likes of Omega, Tag Heuer and Gucci.
The organisation has seen the world of retail change dramatically in recent years. The internet introduced new sales channels to consumers, giving them greater choice. AURUM invested in SAP software to help managers work more effectively and deliver better service to customers. Over time, its SAP solution was superseded by newer versions of the same software, and the organisation wanted to upgrade the technology for greater functionality and deeper business insight. In addition, it was keen to develop a business intelligence (BI) platform and introduce dashboards so managers had an instant view of store performance in real time.
Phil Sherwin, Systems Manager at AURUM Holdings, says: “We had major ambitions for our SAP solution. But our storage was holding us back.” Part of the upgrade involved moving from a 32-bit to a 64-bit environment. With such a business-critical system, Sherwin planned to complete the migration in stages that included fail-safe and roll-back positions. “Our existing storage array didn’t offer the capacity or the flexibility for our SAP upgrade. It was increasingly time- consuming and expensive to maintain,” says Sherwin.
