A legacy building automation system (BAS) coupled with rising energy prices can put favorable pressure on a retailer to invest in new technology. And, so it goes with Advance Auto Parts (AAP). In 2007, the automotive aftermarket retailer was dealing with a legacy building automation system in 1,700 of its 3,500 stores. The legacy system lacked batch capabilities, which caused a full team of people to spend two to three weeks to make store-level lighting and HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) adjustments. James Curry, energy and systems manager at AAP, was tasked with finding a new EMS for the 1,800 stores not already on the legacy building automation system.
