Kindle Fire HDX Release Underlines Mobility Focus

Amazon launched Appstore Developer Select this year, a program for developers who optimize their apps and games for Amazon’s Appstore and Fire OS. The program allows developers to leverage Amazon’s 500,000 ad impressions on the Amazon Mobile Ad Network. Developers also have access to Amazon Appstore Coins Reward. Amazon’s Appstore allows developers to distribute their apps and games to millions of Amazon customers in nearly 200 countries.

The retailer is leveraging the “gift of coins” concept as a way to introduce new customers to over 100,000 apps and games available in the Amazon Appstore. Amazon Coins are available for customers who show interest in purchasing apps, in-app items, and games. “With the Appstore Developer Select program, we’re addressing these discoverability concerns by providing developers with enhanced merchandising opportunities. In addition, we’re helping drive sales by offering Coins rewards on high quality, engaging apps for customers” said Mike George, vice president of Amazon Appstore, games and cloud drive. Hundreds of millions of Coins have been purchased since May.

Amazon announced on Dec. 12 that customers can purchase Amazon Coins as gifts for apps, games, and in-app items in the Amazon Appstore and on Kindle Fire. Mobile has been a focus for the company this year with the introduction of the generation of Kindle Fire — the Kindle Fire HDX. Amazon introduced the Kindle Fire HDX, a third generation tablet, at $139. New enterprise and productivity features in Fire OS 3.0 “Mojito”— the next generation of software and services that power the Kindle Fire tablets — include encryption, secure Wi-Fi, a native VPN client, Kerberos support for Intranet access, integration with leading mobile device management (MDM) solutions, a new email client, built-in OfficeSuite support, and wireless printing capabilities.

Developer resources include a Mobile Associates API for Kindle Fire and compatible Android devices. Developers can merchandise physical and digital items from Amazon.com, and mobile ads help developers monetize apps by displaying high quality, relevant display ads from brand advertisers, including Amazon.
