Avalara Reports Hundreds Of November Sales Tax Rate, And Rule Changes

Sales tax compliance becomes more complex as states need to raise funds. Report issued by leading Sales Tax Management Provider Avalara.

Avalara, North America's leading provider of automated, up-to-date sales and use tax solutions, has issued its latest monthly rate and boundary update, automatically providing hundreds of new rates, rules, and jurisdiction boundary definitions to the company's thousands of licensed users.

In preparation for the month of November, taxing authorities in 25 states made 257 changes to their sales tax rates and rules. Indiana led the pack this month with 26 changes. States with sales tax holidays included West Virginia and North and South Carolina. Most changes included new rules expanding taxability on goods and services. Through October 2010, Departments of Revenue have implemented over 5,000 sales tax rate and rule changes across the U.S. As states struggle with budget cuts and deficits, changing tax rates and rules has become a popular means to raise more funds. This further complicates tax compliance for businesses trying to keep abreast of the changes without using automated calculation services.

"These changes are a good representation of exactly how complex and difficult sales tax compliance can be for businesses of all sizes," said Mike Gardner, Avalara's vice president of compliance. "The year 2010 has seen a remarkable number of taxability rules changes. As a result, an automated web-based solution like AvaTax is really the only way for companies to ensure that their calculations and collections are based on the most accurate, up-to-date information and thereby reduce their exposure to audits and penalties."

Avalara monitors nearly 15,000 taxing jurisdictions and provides – on a monthly basis – its more than 25,000 licensed users and on-demand sales tax management clients with the most up-to-date rate and boundary information available.
