Brooks Brothers Unveils New Flagship In San Francisco At Union Square

Brooks Brothers recently announced the opening of its newest retail location in San Francisco, Brooks Brothers at Union Square. The new flagship store will carry the collections for men, women, and children. At 26,000 square feet, this is the second largest retail location in North America.

The interior of the San Francisco store takes inspiration from the nearly 100-year old Brooks Brothers flagship store at 346 Madison Ave in New York City.  The four-level store features the full Fall 2013 Brooks Brothers men’s and women’s collection, a dedicated shop-in-shop for the Fleece children’s collection, the collegiate inspired Red Fleece label and the Black Fleece by Brooks Brothers collection designed by Thom Browne.

Reflecting the interior atmosphere of 346 Madison, the first floor is covered in pale cherry wood.  The women’s floor is elegantly adorned by clean white paneling and marble floors.  The mezzanine holds the Red Fleece label for men and women. On the fourth floor, gentlemen will discover a clubby atmosphere, with dark mahogany paneling and antiques throughout. The cash desk serves as a coffee bar and lounging area, and there is a pool table for shopper’s entertainment.  Many of the stores fixtures and decorations are antique, crafting a truly unique shopping environment in keeping with Brooks Brothers’ heritage.

Brooks Brothers has been dressing San Franciscans for more than 70 years beginning with the first Brooks Brothers sales office, which opened at 111 Sutter Street Building in 1939. The Sutter Street location served as a showroom, where samples of the full line of Brooks merchandise were displayed and orders filled from New York. On January 2, 1958, a permanent store was established at the corners of Post Street, Grant Avenue and Maiden Lane. This location carried the full line of boys’ and men’s’ clothing and furnishings. The store later moved to 150 Post Street in July 2000 and remained there until this year. In 2010 Brooks Brothers opened an exclusive Black Fleece by Brooks Brothers boutique at 2223 Fillmore Street.

Brooks Brothers, America’s oldest retailer was established in 1818 by Henry Sand Brooks.  From its humble beginnings in New York City at 116 Cherry Street to its position today as a global purveyor of American style, Brooks Brothers has continued to influence and innovate fashion.  Brooks Brothers was the first to offer ready-to-wear clothing, introduced seersucker and madras to the American market, and created one of the most enduring and popular items: the iconic button-down collar shirt.

Brooks Brothers is not only a clothing brand, but has become part of the American narrative. The brand has the distinction of outfitting of 39 of the 44 Presidents of the United States. It was a favorite of some of the country’s greatest cultural icons such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Clark Gable, Andy Warhol and Katherine Hepburn. The company continues to dress many of today’s leading celebrities and outfits some of TV’s and Hollywood’s biggest productions such as the costumes for the Emmy winning drama Mad Men and Baz Lurhman’s The Great Gatsby.

Iconic articles of clothing such as Lincoln’s Inaugural Great Coat (the coat created for his second inauguration and worn on the evening of his assassination) and FDR’s cape (made famous by the photograph at the Yalta Conference in 1945) are just two examples of how intertwined Brooks Brothers is with American History.

“Made-In-America” garments are an intricate part of the Brooks Brothers heritage and serve as a source of pride for the company.  With factories in Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Long Island City, Brooks Brothers continues its support for American manufacturing and high quality craftsmanship.
