With nearly 900,000 locations, U.S. chain retail stores are among the largest commercial consumers of electrical power. However, according to Retail Systems Research, only 42% of retailers have deployed some form of energy regulation equipment within any of their stores. Those who have deployed some form of energy management typically have not developed ongoing strategies for managing the units they installed, instead taking a "set it and forget it" approach. On the contrary, Michaels Stores has deployed energy management systems (EMSs) across their chain of stores.
