While economic conditions have pounded virtually all segments of retail in recent years, the home furnishings sector has been hit particularly hard. As recently as September of this year, slow furniture sales were contributing considerably to the 39% of retailers reporting a drop in year-over-year September figures, according to the Commerce Department.

But regional retailer Levin Furniture is bucking that trend, and VP of operations Ward Dingmann says strategic operational decisions have played a key role in its preservation.
