The recent earthquake and threat of hurricane Irene that affected Washington, D.C. in a span of one week elevated my priorities from aware to alert. Fortunately, these events were not devastating to the majority of our members, but collectively, they were a strong reminder to deepen our resources and broaden member participation regarding critical business issues.
As I head into my second year at Food Marketing Institute, my role has become a convergence of industry response mechanisms: asset protection, risk management, supply chain, and IT. In theory, I represent the supply chain of events that food retailers must be prepared to execute for their businesses and customers in a time of need.
