Target. Neiman Marcus. Supervalu. P.F. Chang’s. Even thrift-store operator Goodwill Industries. They and a growing number of other retailers have suffered injurious data breaches. No wonder frightened retailers are examining and enhancing their security networks and programs.

It couldn’t come soon enough. Sophisticated cyber criminals and other data thieves are getting bolder in their incursions against retailers — chains in particular. They have grasped ways to exploit Achilles’ heels in retailers’ security defenses — whether through POS sale faults, failure to extend security efforts to their broader networks, third-party vendors/partners, or internal employee weaknesses.
