Wegmans recently created variety of store-brand natural cleaners, providing health-conscious customers with safe products that clean effectively while protecting the environment all at affordable prices.
Through collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Wegmans found the perfect blend of earth-friendly, safe ingredients that cleans just as well as typical cleaners—minus the extra, unnecessary chemicals. The seven cleaning products include: Wegmans Laundry Detergent, usable for all washing machines including HE. The plant-based detergent is strong on dirt and grease and serves 140 loads; Wegmans Mineral-Based Fabric Softener, good for 50 loads, leaving clothes soft and smelling fresh; Wegmans Plant-Based 32 oz Window Cleaner; Wegmans Plant-based 24 fl. oz. Dish Soap; Wegmans 32 fl. oz. Plant-Based Tub and Tile Foaming Cleaner, destroys mildew and grime in showers, countertops, sinks, and more—without the harsh fumes and chemicals; Wegmans 32 fl. oz. Multi-Surface Cleaner, cleans grease and household dirt, crayons, fingerprints, and more; Wegmans 24 fl. oz. Toilet Bowl Cleaner, lemon scented product cleans and removes tough stains.
The company line of cleaners contain active ingredients sourcing from plant and minerals—coconut and palm oil works as surfactants, cutting through and breaking down organic compounds, aka, dirt. The list of active ingredients are included on labels, while inactive ingredients can be found in the product catalog at Wegmans.com, listing detailed information on each ingredient. All Wegmans natural cleaning and laundry products are free of unfavorable ingredients that are common in most regular, big-brand cleaners such as, phosphates, parabens, triclosan, phthalates, chlorine bleach, endocrine disruptors, BPA, animal by-products, and animal product testing.
In 2010, the company began noticing a growth in the adaption of green cleaning, and began incorporating more earth-friendly name brand cleaners onto store shelves. “Moving in a more earth-friendly direction is a continuous process for the company and for customers. But taking steps together – even little ones – can make a difference.” said Wegmans’ Sustainability Coordinator, Jason Wadsworth. Four years later, the company is stocking shelves with their own version of natural cleaners, alongside the pricier brands—giving customers more affordable, quality options.
Wegmans is dedicated to providing customers with the best products for their well-being. The inclusion of natural cleaning products goes hand-in-hand with the grocer’s commitment to organic farming. Wegmans started their own organic farms in 2007—growing organic produce and working together with local farmers to promote sustainability. Wegmans supplies stores with over hundreds of organic produce—everything from bananas, triple-washed salad greens, and all types of berries. Wegmans resourceful efforts include organic farming, local farming, reducing the carbon footprint with company practices, incorporation of their reusable grocery bags, recycling, sourcing products through trusted partners, such as their high-grade, fresh seafood, and supporting the Sustainable Forestry Initiative program.
