Communication. Merriam-Webster defines the word quite simply as a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system.
In the distributed retail enterprise, it’s defined more aptly by the very challenge it represents. Communication—or the lack thereof—falls squarely in the center of the modern retail brand promise failure. Channel proliferation, which has wrought havoc and rained complexity on back-end inventory and retail brand managers, has only exacerbated the retail communication crisis.
Consider it in the Simplest of Terms
To the consumer, you are one brand, regardless of store location, channel, or associate interaction. If the consumer sees an item on your site, she expects its availability in her local store. If it’s not available in her local store, she expects you to find it for her in another store or warehouse. Worse than the inability to find and fulfill her desire is the inability to try.
