Jim Barber Named As Next UPS International President

UPS has revealed that the president of its international arm, Dan Brutto, will retire at the end of April after 38 years with the company.

Brutto, 56, has led international strategy at UPS for the past five and a half years.

He will be succeeded as UPS International president by Jim Barber, who is currently president of UPS Europe, in a move that will see Barber becoming one of the 10 most senior executives at the world’s largest package delivery company, joining the UPS Management Committee.

Scott Davis, the UPS chairman and chief executive, suggested that the appointment of its UPS Europe president as its new international chief underlined the company’s ambitions in Europe.

UPS saw its plans in Europe hit by last month’s collapse of the $6bn takeover bid for Netherlands-based integrator TNT Express.

Davis said: “We remain bullish on Europe for the long term and we are near completion of the three-year expansion of our main European air hub in Cologne. In addition, we are well-positioned in Asia and other regions of the world.”

The UPS chairman said it was an “exciting time”, with the company continuing to seek expansion through organic growth and acquisition.

“Jim will be very effective in expanding our international business while driving innovation, new services and improving profitability,” he said, adding that the transition to the new International president would be “seamless”.

Barber joined UPS in 1985 as a delivery driver in the US state of Georgia, before moving into various accounting roles. The 1990s saw him in financial controller roles in various UPS regions and districts within the United States, before he joined the company’s Mergers and Acquisitions Group based at HQ in Atlanta.

Two years as Controller of the Southeast Region in the US led to a vice president of finance position in the Europe Region in 2004, followed by roles within Europe including managing director of UPS UK & Ireland from 2006, when he oversaw integration of Lynx Express following its acquisition by UPS in 2005.

Auburn University graduate Barber has been president of UPS Europe since July 2011, based at the UPS regional headquarters in Brussels where he leads 40,000 employees within operations in more than 120 countries and territories, in Europe the Middle East and Africa.

Brutto

Davis paid tribute to outgoing International president Brutto, pointing to his successful leadership on the world stage.

“He sets a strategy and then enables people to get large ideas accomplished,” he said. “Dan’s contributions will have a lasting impact on future generations of UPSers and we are grateful for his dedication.”

Brutto joined UPS back in 1975 as a part-time employee while he was a student at Loyola University, Illinois.

His career has included various management positions in operations, finance, marketing and business development, and the overseeing of UPS operational expansion into 35 countries and beyond small packages.
