Sports Authority operates more than 460 stores across the United States. At its locations in western states, the company has traditionally sold lift tickets for a number of nearby ski resorts.

The company originally began looking at a kiosk solution at the request of Vail Resorts. Vail began requiring self-service kiosks to sell some of its lift tickets and connected Sports Authority with a company called Livewire International to deploy the devices.
