Loss Prevention: Checkpoint Systems Introduces New ORT Solutions Suite To Help Retailers Fight Organized Retail Theft

Checkpoint Systems, Inc. the manufacturer and marketer of identification, tracking, security and merchandising solutions for the retail industry and its supply chain, recently announced the introduction of the ORT Solutions Suite, the company's new portfolio of products designed to mitigate the impact of Organized Retail Theft (ORT). According to Federal law enforcement authorities, ORT costs retailers an estimated 30 billion dollars per year in merchandise. The new solutions will provide customers with a feature-rich, highly-scaleable set of retail security and merchandising tools to help reduce shrink, increase shelf availability of merchandise and improve profitability.

"Organized theft rings have been around for years," said George Off, Checkpoint Systems' CEO. "However, as these groups have become more sophisticated, new security practices and systems need to be adopted in order to help the retail community stay one step ahead. That's why Checkpoint is extremely pleased to be introducing these new solutions to help retailers proactively respond to this alarming trend and ever-increasing threat to their bottom line."

The ORT Solutions Suite consists of the following solutions:

DatatraceDNA System

The DatatraceDNA System is a simple-to-deploy solution for tracking and authentication of Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and other high-value items during Organized Retail Crime (ORC) investigations. The system provides retailers with a simple means of proving ownership if their goods are recovered during an investigation, and provides for possible reintroduction of the goods back into inventory.

ShelfAlert

ShelfAlert is a fixture monitoring system designed to detect unusual product movement on the retail sales floor. The ShelfAlert controller will send an alert to store personnel when a preset number of products have been removed from shelf fixtures over a short period of time. The system also reports out-of-stocks with a separate message. ShelfAlert is battery powered, field-adjustable, and transmits wirelessly anywhere in the store, making installation simple and cost effective. Current fixture solutions include infant formula, CDs and DVDs, but many other products could be protected with the technology as well. ShelfAlert provides real-time notification of possible ORT events and helps to prevent lost sales.

TamperTags

TamperTags are tamper-evident identification labels customized for supply chain or item-level applications. The labels, when applied to items within high-shrink consumer packaged goods categories, provides a visual deterrent to shop-lifters and professional thieves. The unique and proprietary ultra-strong adhesive assures that the labels cannot be removed without damaging the original packaging, which creates a less desirable product for resale on the black market. If merchandise is stolen and later recovered, the labels also provide an easy way for retailers to identify their goods.

MetalPoint

MetalPoint is the first entry alarm system in North America to identify professional thieves as they enter a retail store. The MetalPoint detector activates a silent alarm when a person enters a store carrying foil-lined "booster" bags or wearing foil-lined clothing, which can be used to defeat EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) systems. The silent alarm gives store personnel advance warning that an incident may occur. It allows security personnel to monitor the person's activities and intervene if they attempt to steal merchandise. MetalPoint can be integrated into Checkpoint's Radio Frequency (RF)-based EAS systems, or used as a stand- alone detector, permitting retailers who are using alternate EAS technologies to combat booster bag theft in their stores, too.

Clarity APV System

The Clarity APV (Advanced Public View) System is designed with state-of-the-art technology for security applications. Already a highly effective deterrent to shoplifting, these LCD monitors also incorporate logo-switching capability, which automatically changes the display from a static logo graphic to the internal camera when motion on the sales floor is detected. This makes them ideal for placement in aisles where ORT is a problem, not only to capture a high-quality image of the incident, but to attract attention as the display switches to public-view mode. Mounting the unit properly may also provide viewing from adjacent aisles, making it more difficult for ORT teams to operate unnoticed. The system is available in 20-inch and 32-inch versions with multiple camera and audio options.

"These new products and systems further demonstrate Checkpoint's commitment to helping retailers lose less merchandise to ORT and ensure that their products are on the shelves and available to honest customers," concluded Off. "We understand their loss prevention challenges and are working hard to provide them with merchandise-based shrink management solutions that deliver value today and tomorrow."
