Pervasive IBM 4690 Operating System Helps Retailers Adopt New Customer Services At Lower Cost

IBM introduces a new version of the popular 4690 Operating System for retail point-of-sale systems that will power the new hardware and applications retailers need to attract and retain customers, while helping businesses meet their critical need to save costs. Designed to offer two unique operating modes, IBM 4690 OS V6 can run a store's existing hardware and software, and as needs change, expand to take advantage of more advanced technology — all while leveraging the additional cost-saving features of IBM Retail Systems Management.

IBM 4690 V6 builds on the proven platform that close to a million retailers worldwide are using today on IBM SurePOS 700 point-of-sale systems to deliver a reliable customer experience and to optimize their store operations. Offering a choice of two operating modes—classic and enhanced — demonstrates IBM's commitment to its existing install base. The classic mode enables retailers to leverage existing investments in hardware, Java tools and applications. Enhanced mode supports some of the latest IBM hardware platforms, such as IBM BladeCenter® and IBM System x™ servers. It also provides a Java Virtual Machine 1.5 so retailers can deploy advanced Java™ 2 applications and make use of the large, growing pool of customer service applications from IBM Business Partner solutions.

An updated version of IBM Remote Management Agent is supported by the new 4690 V6, further helping to reduce IT service and support costs. It allows management and monitoring on devices and peripherals through proactive system controls. Information is integrated into the corporate IT management structure, delivering accurate status to remote IT support staff who can address problems often before they affect business.

With IBM 4690 V6, security continues to comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). Forced sign-off provides protection for unattended POS controllers. IPSec, or IP Security, helps ensure security-enhanced Internet communications and helps protect the network with authorization and encryption at the packet level. Using robust Secure Shell (SSH) technology, IBM 4690 also enables security-rich remote logon and file transfer via secure Telnet and Secure FTP (SFTP).
