Fulfillment goes beyond just picking, packing, and shipping. Virtually every major retailer requires its suppliers to meet stringent requirements including parameters such as on-time delivery and order accuracy. Retailers expect "right-time, right quantity" in compliance with detailed packing and shipping guidelines. To make matters more complex, these requirements can change almost at will. Noncompliance with retailer specifications can result in penalties ranging from charge-backs to non-payment of invoices.
