POS Solutions: Mervyns Completes Chainwide POS Conversion In 12 Weeks Thanks To NCR Deployment Services

Speed counts. Or at least it did for Mervyns when the department store chain asked NCR Corporation to convert customer checkout stations at its 173 locations to a new point-of-sale (POS) solution within a 12-week timeframe.

With the conversion of more than 4,000 checkout stations in its existing stores completed successfully, Mervyns has turned to NCR to provide POS technology and installation services for four new store locations that will open this year.

Mervyns' decision to replace its legacy POS systems was part of a major strategic technology initiative that marked a milestone in the chain's re-establishment as an independent company.

"As we evaluated POS technology options, our criteria included world-class systems that are built for the demanding environment of a busy retail department store," said Kurt Streitz, Mervyns' senior vice president and chief information officer. "Equally important, we needed to have the complete store solution deployed in a short time frame, with no disruption to store operations."

For its customer checkout stations, Mervyns selected the NCR RealPOS 70 workstation and NCR RealPOS 7167 multifunction thermal printer. Featuring a touch-screen cashier interface, the NCR RealPOS 70 is designed for ready serviceability and superior availability.

NCR's Retail Deployment Services team provided end-to-end management of the rollout. Prior to shipment to each store, NCR's Fulfillment Center prepared the turnkey deployment package by loading software, staging and testing all NCR and third-party components – from servers to terminals to peripheral devices. Installations took place after store hours, with as many as five stores converted a night, making the process virtually transparent to store employees and Mervyns' customers.

"NCR provided a compelling price/performance proposition with the NCR RealPOS 70," Streitz said. "In addition, we found that NCR was unique in the scope of its deployment services offering. We were impressed by the team's extensive experience in managing large, complex rollouts and their demonstrated ability to meet aggressive deadlines. Each of our store environments is different from the others in one way or another, and NCR brought ‘out of the box' thinking to each site, ensuring an on-time, successful conversion."

"Mervyns' commitment to excellence is reflected in all aspects of the company's operational strategies and management philosophy, including their strategic approach to technology," said Bruce Donis, NCR vice president, U.S. Retail Sales. "By engaging with NCR at multiple levels in a collaborative partnership, the Mervyns team fostered a creative and dynamic environment, further ensuring the success of their technology replacement program."
