An IT strategist shares his tips for making sure online data doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

Crime not only pays; it costs. That is, enterprises are spending close to $12 million to protect themselves from cybercrime, an increase of 26 percent from 2012 levels, according to a survey sponsored by Hewlett-Packard and conducted by the Ponemon Institute.

Thus, organizations are looking to improve their ability to stop or quickly detect business logic abuses, which tend to result from a criminal discovering a flaw in the functionality of a website. In most cases, the criminal uses the legitimate pages of the website to perpetrate cyber attacks, hacks, or fraud. The plan, of course, is to steal money or confidential information or exploit the system for illicit gains. But another possible goal is to destroy the reputation or brand of a company.
