Take a loss prevention approach to data management.
Retailers take great pains to prevent losses in their physical inventory. Surveys show loss prevention as one of the top five business concerns in retail today. And, of course, the industry spends billions every year making sure that merchandise and supplies don’t just disappear from trucks, warehouses, and stores.
But, when it comes to the retailer’s “inventory” of business information, especially sales and stocking transactions, companies might take pains to keep important data from being stolen, but they think very little about other forms of loss they should prevent.
