Wincor Nixdorf Installs 600,000th BEETLE POS System
Wincor Nixdorf, Inc., the global leader in open system solutions for the retail and banking industries, today announced that it has installed its 600,000th BEETLE point-of-sale (POS) system.
The BEETLE ushered in a new era in open POS systems when the first model was introduced in 1992. With the advent of the BEETLE, PC technology replaced proprietary environments as the new standard for POS systems. The very name of the product indicated the BEETLE's design goals: it had to be small and reliable, easy and secure to operate, economical to run, and simple to maintain. In the 11 years since its introduction, the BEETLE has met those goals while building an unsurpassed track record of "firsts" in retail point-of-sale:
- First PC-based POS system (1992)
- First thin-client POS system (1999)
- First Linux-ready POS system (1999)
- First POS system certified for Windows XP Embedded (2001)
- First comprehensive solution for IBM 4690 migration (2003)
Wincor Nixdorf's experience in POS systems dates back to 1973, when the company introduced the world's first computerized POS system, the Nixdorf Model 710, with enough memory to hold both data and application programs. European retailers quickly embraced the concept, and the company became one of the leading manufacturers of POS systems in Europe.
The company continued to add innovations to its product line and sold more than 200,000 of these POS systems, prior to the introduction of the BEETLE family. In all, Wincor Nixdorf has now installed more than 800,000 POS systems since 1973. Today Wincor Nixdorf is one of the fastest growing providers of Point-of-Sale (POS) and ATM solutions, ranking third worldwide.
"Wincor Nixdorf has reached yet another milestone with the installation of 600,000 BEETLEs at customer locations around the world," said Jeff Soisson, president of Wincor Nixdorf USA. "The BEETLE continues to set the standard for reliable, powerful POS systems that lower the retailer's Total Cost of Ownership."
About the BEETLE Family of POS Appliances
Wincor Nixdorf's BEETLE family is the most prolific open POS platform in the world. Highly versatile, the BEETLE addresses the complete spectrum of retail touch points, including thin-client POS terminals, lean-and thick-client POS systems, self-service kiosks, inquiry and service desk workstations, and mobile POS devices.
BEETLEs are built upon a single, open technology platform - the BEETLE One architecture - that includes a common motherboard and Embedded Intel chipset technology, as well as a choice of Intel processors; industry-standard interfaces for retail peripherals; a wide range of storage, expansion and display options; and the most extensive operating system and peripheral device support in the industry. This provides mix-and-match flexibility between BEETLE models, simplifies service requirements, and guarantees a consistent, stable platform for next-generation POS solutions.
