Suite of business software allows workers to chat and share documents.
Walmart has announced that its employees are now using Facebook Workplace, a suite of business software that allows workers to chat and share documents. Facebook Workplace is essentially a business version of the social network. According to Facebook, more than 14,000 companies now use the Workplace software.
Walmart decided to start using Workplace because “it was time for a new generation of SaaS apps to connect everyone in the company,” Facebook's VP of Workplace, Julien Codorniou, told Business Insider during a recent interview.
Tech Crunch reported that the software is being rolled out in stages, beginning with associates and teams at Sam’s Club and other parts of the operation, though it will eventually be adopted throughout the whole of its organization. With its 2.3 million employees, Walmart is the world’s largest employer.
“Walmart’s vision of the future is centered around people–by serving the communities people live in and the people who work at Walmart,” Walmart chief information officer Clay Johnson said in a statement. “Workplace shares this mission, and together we're building the next generation workforce.”
“We believe the right technology can empower our people. Walmart’s vision of the future is centered around people — by serving the communities people live in and the people who work at Walmart,” said Clay Johnson, Walmart’s CIO and EVP. “Workplace shares this mission, and together we’re building the next generation workforce.”
Walmart teams have used Workplace to date to share photos of product displays with other stores; to broadcast news via Live video stream; and to manage communication between global geographic regions with Facebook’s automatic translation features.
Walmart is engaged in optimizing its digital strategies, and that means adopting a number of technologies and platforms. Dan Kneeshaw, a senior director of digital strategy and brand engagement at Walmart, told Tech Crunch, “We use a variety of tools within the technology landscape. We brought Workplace in to complement other tools that are being used.”
